When Giving Back Pays in Major WaysPublished on October 24th, 2016
I’m a big believer in giving back. When we give back to build and support our community, we all win. Whether you give time to volunteer or donate money to support your favorite charities, your impact trickles down to touch people you’ve never even met. How awesome is that!
After some light research, turns out that the benefits of volunteering and giving back are even broader. First, as you can imagine, volunteerism brings together people from different economic classes and walks of life. According to the experts, this contributes to building what’s called “social capital”. What this really means is increase in social trust and sense of belonging in communities. “Social capital” in turn encourages even more giving back and volunteerism. Creating a vicious cycle of social good.
Also, volunteers can learn skills and knowledge that they can successfully apply to their lives and careers. It’s a win-win for everyone.
Strangely, volunteering rates in Canada have declined in the last few years. Out of curiosity, I looked up the numbers and there was a 4% decline in Canadian volunteers from 2010 to 2013. And this, considering our population actually grew by 3.5% in that same period.
As far as donations go, 82% of Canadians made donations to charities in 2013, down from 85% in 2004.
A fun fact and a glimpse of good news however, is that in Quebec the total amount of donations rose by 35% from 2004 to 2013.
Of course, we create the biggest impact together. That’s why I want to tell you about the charities I choose to support and how you can do the same.
Make A Wish Foundation
Make A Wish Foundation is my charity of choice for several reasons. For one, their noble mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. They are an international organization, which means they can collaborate with their affiliates all around the world and grant wishes that other organizations might not be able to. All donations go to Canadian children, so your impact stays within our community. The best part is that a team of volunteers is assigned to each child and their family, so they get the personal attention and touch that they deserve. It’s amazing to think that they’ve made more than 350,000 wishes come true since their establishment in 1980.
I personally can’t think of a better way to impact a child’s life with hope and joy, especially when they need it most. So if that’s a cause that speaks to you, you can join me and contribute here.
Good Shepherd Elementary School
This is the school that I went to when I was a kid. As you might be able to guess, I have a special place in my heart for kids and education is one of the most important aspects that shape a kid’s life. I also love giving back to a school that I was once a part of. It’s great when our impact goes directly to our immediate community.
Let this inspire you to give back, support charitable causes and know that you are making a difference.
